NEWS - St Athan

Resurfaced runway ‘one of the best’

by David James, South Wales Echo
A £6.5M resurfacing of the runway at a former South Wales airbase has been dubbed “one of the best in the UK”.
The work at the former RAF St Athan in the Vale of Glamorgan is part of plans to turn the site into an aerospace business park.
Work at the Assembly Government-owned site began last summer and was described as one of the best in the UK by the runway inspector.
First Minister Rhodri Morgan said: “Airstrips such as these are vital in supporting the aerospace sector in Wales and now this major investment is complete we will be well placed to take advantage of emerging demand.
“Together with plans for the development of the Defence Technical Academy and the Aerospace Business Park, St Athan can look forward to a strong future as one of the UK’s premier aerospace business locations.”
Upgrading work involved overlaying the main 1,825m runway with 30,000 tonnes of asphalt and renewal of the ground lighting system.
Wing Commander Richard Read, the site director, said: “This has been an exemplar project of co-operation, communication and delivery, also enabling the VC10 to continue to operate as a key RAF transport asset.”
Plans for the Aerospace Business Park are expected to be submitted in the spring.
